Digital product passports for construction products

Under the revised Construction Products Regulation (CPR), digital product passports become the central hub for Declarations of Performance and Conformity (DoP&C), CE marking, environmental declarations (EPDs) and installation instructions.

Regulatory framework CPR (EU) 2024/3110 + ESPR

The revised CPR governs digital product passports for harmonised construction products, aligned with ESPR.

Core documentation DoP&C, CE and verified EPD

Performance and conformity merge into a single DoP&C directly linked to environmental indicators.

Developers, architects and contractors already demand machine-readable climate and logbook data in tenders.

What applies – and why this product group is prioritised

The revised Construction Products Regulation – CPR (EU) 2024/3110 fundamentally upgrades how construction product information is exchanged across a building's lifecycle. Digital product passport requirements take effect progressively as harmonised technical specifications (hEN and EADs) are updated for each product family and the Commission's construction DPP registry goes live.

For manufacturers of building materials, windows, doors, structural elements, insulation and HVAC/MEP components, this means existing documents – Declarations of Performance (now combined into DoP&C), CE markings, EN 15804 Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and chemical assessments – must move from scattered website PDFs into a version-controlled, machine-readable data model.

Product data and documentation to map now

A digital product passport relies on verifiable master data and traceable supplier evidence. For this product group, you should structure data across four core domains:

Performance & CE

DoP&C and technical specifications

  • Combined Declaration of Performance and Conformity (DoP&C)
  • Unique product-type identification code, harmonised standard (hEN) or ETA reference
  • Declared performance values (fire resistance, load capacity, thermal U-value, acoustics)
  • Notified Body certificates, test reports and AVS assessment level
Climate & LCA

EPD and environmental indicators

  • Global Warming Potential (GWP total, fossil, biogenic, LULUCF) per EN 15804+A2
  • Third-party verified EPD (product-specific or group-specific)
  • Recycled content share, secondary materials and bio-based content
  • Structured data for green building schemes (BREEAM, LEED, DGNB, Nordic Swan)
Materials & chemistry

Material composition and substances

  • Bill of materials by weight (steel, aluminium, timber, glass, mineral wool, polymers)
  • REACH Candidate List substances of very high concern (SVHC > 0.1% w/w)
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS), indoor air emission ratings and chemical compliance
  • Raw material provenance and certifications (e.g. FSC/PEFC timber, mill certificates)
Building lifecycle

Installation, maintenance and reuse

  • Installation manuals, handling instructions and safety precautions
  • Operation and maintenance (O&M) schedules and replaceable wear parts
  • Reference service life and instructions for non-destructive deconstruction
  • Guidance for structural reuse, refurbishment or material recycling

Typical data challenges – and how to avoid data debt

In construction manufacturing, DoPs, EPDs and installation guides usually already exist – but sit locked inside separate PDF folders without a clean link to the exact SKU, dimension variant or customer delivery.

Many construction product manufacturers offer thousands of configurable variants (dimensions, glazing options, surface coatings, hardware) where thermal performance and carbon footprint vary by configuration. When main contractors and property owners request product data for digital building logbooks and climate declarations, manual document handling quickly becomes a bottleneck.

By structuring parameters and certificates in a unified data model now, you prepare for mandatory CPR passports while speeding up tender responses today. Read more in our guide from ERP and PLM to product passports.

How to get started in 3 practical steps

  1. 1

Audit your product families against hEN standards, DoPs and EPDs

Map which product groups fall under harmonised standards and where your current DoP, CE and EPD files are stored and maintained.

  2. 2

Link performance and climate values to the right SKU and variant

Replace manual document folders with a structured model where declared performance, GWP values and manuals are tied to each product type.

  3. 3

Publish traceable construction passports with OC

Bring ERP data, supplier certificates and technical sheets together in Original Creation and share them via URL, QR code or API.
